The Liederkranz German Band is Indianapolis' premier volunteer German-American musical ensemble. Through energetic performances, cultural celebrations, and educational programming, we bring the traditions of German music to audiences throughout Indiana.
Whether you join us in the audience or on stage, we invite you to experience the music, traditions, and Gemütlichkeit that have connected generations of German-Americans for more than a century.

Who We Are
The Liederkranz German Band honors Indianapolis' rich German musical traditions through fun, high-energy performances of traditional and contemporary German music.
Our mission is to inspire pride in German-American heritage by providing an inclusive community where musicians of all backgrounds can learn, perform, and celebrate together.
What We Play
What We Play
From traditional polkas, waltzes, and marches to modern German favorites, holiday music, concert works, and audience sing-alongs, our repertoire reflects the many sounds of German-speaking Europe and the German-American experience.
Our performances range from authentic Oktoberfest celebrations and Christkindlmarkts to formal concert presentations, community festivals, private events, and educational programs.
Viva Colonia
Filmed in both Cologne, Germany and Indianapolis, Indiana, this video celebrates the special connection between two cities that have been Sister Cities since 1988. Their partnership was created to encourage cultural exchange, friendship, and cooperation between the people of Cologne and Indianapolis.
From the streets of Köln (Cologne) to the heart of Indianapolis, we hope this video captures the fun, friendship, and collaboration that music can bring to both sides of the Atlantic.

In München steht ein Hofbräuhaus
Raise a stein and join the celebration! The Indianapolis Liederkranz German Band brings the beloved classic "In München steht ein Hofbräuhaus" to life in a video filmed across Munich, Germany and central Indiana.
Featuring one of our favorite local watering holes, Half Liter BBQ, and the talented dancers of the Fort Wayne Tänzer, this video captures the spirit of Bavarian music, dancing, friendship, and a good old-fashioned German beer hall celebration.
From the heart of Munich to Indianapolis, we're celebrating an iconic song that has become synonymous with good friends, great music, and Gemütlichkeit!
Freizeit ("Free Time") Polka
Introducing: The LKGB Oberkrainer Ensemble!
This is a beautiful and unique polka composed by Brane Prešeren and released by Alpski Kvintet from Slovenia in 1986. The Slovenian title, ‘V prostem času’ means ‘In my spare time’, and the German title, ‘Freizeit’ pretty much means the same thing (‘Spare time’ or ‘Leisure time’).
This tune features a melody that could be considered a little jazzy - a bit unusual for Alpine folk music. The composer is also the mastermind behind some of Alpski Kvintet's most unique and energetic instrumentals, many of which were written to showcase virtuosic trumpet playing.

The Liederkranz Band travels all over the Hoosier state, and sometimes even beyond, performing 30-40 times each year.

We welcome musicians of all backgrounds, skill levels, instruments, and voice parts with no audition required.
You don't have to be German or speak the language to join (though it does help with the sing-alongs) - you just have to love German music!
Rehearsals happen Monday evenings at 7:30 PM on the first floor of the Indianapolis Liederkranz.
